Information reporting & withholding compliance — 1099, 1042-S and W-8/W-9
About the firm

A boutique firm built for a specialist problem

InfoReporting Solutions exists to bring clarity to information reporting and withholding — and to give nonfinancial businesses a specialist they can actually reach.

Overview

Practical support where the rules were never written for you

InfoReporting Solutions was founded to deliver practical, client-focused support in information reporting and withholding. The primary emphasis is to assist businesses in nonfinancial industries such as media and entertainment, pharmaceuticals, and retail.

Nonfinancial businesses face unique challenges that require tailored solutions rather than a one-size-fits-all approach. Because reporting responsibilities often fall to procurement, accounts payable and other operational teams, it is important for a tax advisor to understand how these teams work and to collaborate on a strategy that fits their processes. Since most regulations were originally developed for financial institutions, careful analysis is essential to adapt these requirements appropriately.

Media & entertainment

Royalties, residuals and cross-border talent payments that rarely fit a standard template.

Pharmaceuticals

Complex vendor, research and grant payments with real withholding and sourcing questions.

Retail & consumer

High-volume payee populations where small reporting errors scale quickly into penalties.

Our philosophy

Client care, careful analysis

The philosophy is centered on supporting clients in navigating their information reporting requirements with confidence and accuracy. The core emphasis is client care — working closely with each client to clarify the rules and identify the best operational strategies for success.

As a boutique firm, services can be flexibly tailored so that time is dedicated to delivering the highest-quality outcome. InfoReporting Solutions is dedicated to offering personalized, client-first guidance.

Colin Brien

Founder · Tax Attorney (LL.M. in Taxation)

Colin Brien is an attorney with an LL.M. in Taxation. While in law school, he was drawn to tax law for its complexity, evolving case law, and the practical impact it has on businesses.

He brings over 20 years of experience in information reporting and withholding, gained during his career in Big Four public accounting. Early in his career, Colin focused on advising large banks and financial institutions, including private equity and asset management firms.

With the introduction of the Foreign Account Tax Compliance Act (FATCA) in 2010, Colin increasingly advised nonfinancial businesses seeking clarity on the rules and their applicability. While many were not directly impacted by FATCA, it became clear that these organizations needed guidance on the core requirements of withholding and reporting — an area that had often been overlooked.

Colin found this work especially rewarding. He values the opportunity to partner with nonfinancial businesses, where teams are highly engaged and collaborative in addressing compliance challenges.
